Everyone is pushing the idea that you absolutely must have a social media presence. I almost agree. Let me explain…

You are going to have an online presence whether you create one or not. Restaurants, for example, are going to have reviews on sites like Yelp. Some loyal customers might even create a Facebook fan page. Their business is present online – even if they don’t have a website or a Facebook account.

So in order to have control over your online presence, you might want to actually be present on those networks.

But not all businesses are in the same position. Professional services may need to worry about online reviews – but don’t necessarily need to have a Facebook presence. Authors might want to monitor platforms like Amazon, but they don’t necessarily need a Twitter account.

The bottom line is, you need to stick with what works. Don’t spread yourself too thin. 

I hosted a value-packed teleseminar led by my friend Dov Gordon yesterday (you can get the recording here). This is one of the many points that Dov made. Sure, you want to avoid having all of your eggs in one basket as far as attracting customers to your business, but too many people try to build up multiple client-acquisition platforms without every really getting good at a single one.

Start with one. Make it work. Then you can diversify.

By the way, at no point did Dov say anything about using or not using any particular platform. I’m just brining up social media for example’s sake.

If this isn’t you first visit to this blog, then you probably know that I absolutely love content marketing. If this is your first visit then you probably figured it out from your first impression (or I’m doing something terribly wrong :) ).

But that doesn’t mean that it is right for everyone, or that everyone should feel the same.

Content marketing is a method. There are many methods out there. Social media is a method. PPC is a method. Media buying is a method.

My method of choice is content marketing (that’s not to say that I don’t test out others).

Never once have I said you shouldn’t use other methods, nor have I stated that this is the only method you should be sticking to. The only thing I can say is that I know it works because it has worked for me. And it can work for you.

But in order for anything to work. You need to lay the foundation first. What’s the foundation?

    Truer words, etc. This is why I don’t use Pinterest for my own business. It’s a great site, nifty concept, lots of people there, good reasons to use it – but for me, there’s nothing critical or substantial there that isn’t somewhere else, too. Productivity is always about choices, as is marketing. Where and how you choose to spend your time/efforts in the latter truly depends on where your prospects are.

      Pinterest is great for finding funny pictures. I couldn’t imagine trying to use it for business – especially for a site like this. If I had an entertainment site than I’d be all about it. Speaking of productivity – Pinterest is such a time killer!

    I always start my social networking efforts with Twitter. I think Twitter is one of the stronger (and easier to build) networks out there – it’s so easy to get started. There are a great number of other social networks – Pintrest, for example – that I am not a member of, but don’t find myself to be losing much. If it doesn’t work for you, you’re just wasting your time.

      Great points Joe. I’m present on Twitter but don’t spend too much time there. And if you’ve found it works for you, then you should stick with it. And if you decide to diversify I wouldn’t imagine that Pinterest would be a good choice because it’s nothing like Twitter.

    I couldn’t have said it any more perfectly myself. Great post Eugene. People are always so quick to jump on the new and latest hype, when they haven’t even mastered one form of social media yet. Find what works and stick to it!

      Thanks Sean!

      It’s a shame because people often hang on every word of the “gurus” who are always talking about the latest and greatest because it gives them something to talk about – which in turn allows them to get more traffic and notoriety. But if you just stay true to yourself, and not listen to what everyone else is saying, you’ll find more success.
